this is the brain we’re raising…taylor talks

First of all, let me just THANK YOU for all the comments and emails you sent regarding yesterdays post.
I love it when I spill my heart, and there you all are….spilling yours too.
Community does take time….and we are getting there slowly and surely.
Thank you for helping us get there.

On another note, I’ve been wanting to share this text message Jimmy sent me about a conversation he had with Taylor a few weeks ago after Jiu Jitsu.
It’s actually taken me that long to wrap my head around the fact that THIS is the brain God has trusted us to raise.

{written out just as it was sent.}

“Taylor is sharp, so smart that it is shocking.  He started talking about how he doubts God is real again.
I said, ‘Well, then how does it make sense that everything exists?’
And without hesitating he said, ‘Well think about this dad, the universe was always here.”
And I said, ‘But that doesn’t make sense, someone had to create it.’
And again without hesitating he said, ‘Well then it doesn’t make sense to say God was always here either, if you say God was always here, then I say the universe was just always here and there isn’t a God.  It’s the same thing.'”
next text….
“We kept talking about this and I asked him what it was in particular that made him doubt, and he said, ‘Because I don’t see God.’
And I said, ‘You don’t see the wind.’
And again without hesitating he said, ‘Ya, but you see what the wind does.’
And I said, ‘Exactly, just like God, you see what He does.’
Then he smiled, he liked that.
Isn’t that amazing how smart he is at 6?”

I know, right?!?
Now that I think about it, I think God has entrusted more so JIMMY to raise his brain, because the Lord knows if that had come up with me, it would have gone a little more like this….
“Honey…that’s sweet.  But, just have FAITH and BELIEVE.  Now do you want to watch Friends and Hero’s of the Bible and learn more about David and Goliath?”
And apparently that wouldn’t have solved anything for him.
I guess what works for me doesn’t work for everyone.
But, I am so thankful that Taylor is asking those questions now...
and especially that he’s asking Jimmy, who apparently had those same questions at the age of 6.
And somehow my incredible husband just knows how to make sense of it all.
He is able to do the same with me.
Because sometimes having FAITH and BELIEVING needs a little more to back it up.
As I am learning that lesson right along with Taylor.

I may have always grown up a “christian” but I certainly never dared to question it all.
And for so long, I didn’t know WHY I believed it….
I just….did.
I inherited it from my parents….which wasn’t enough to get me through.

And that’s why I love that Taylor questions it.
Because I am confident he will find his OWN faith much sooner than I did.
And he won’t believe simply because it’s just what his mom and dad told him to…
It’ll be because God has made it known to him in a way he could understand at the time he needed to make it his own.
And now even more so, each one of us is growing and learning, because of HIM.
You guys, THAT is the brain we are raising.
And he’s only 6.
We still have many many years ahead of us, and many more tough questions to come.
Hold me now.
Because Jimmy has a long road ahead of him, while I’m busy praying us through.

What a great post! I have noticed this with my little brother (I say little but he’s 12 now) and super intelligent. He wants to be a scientist when he grows up and has started asking questions – he’s in the “I believe in evolution and Is God real and did Jesus actually exist phase?”

I approached his scientific brain by sitting down and watching those Bible/ Jesus documentaries with him on the History Channel. When he saw the historical evidence of Jesus’ existence, he was satisfied (for now). But, it is really challenging.

I have been a christian all my life, and find I am not necessarily equipped with the answers I need when non-believers confront me with certain questions. My answer is “Have faith and believe” but for some people that is not enough. They need facts.

It’s a good test of our faith when these little guys ask questions.

    Good luck!!

  2. What a blessing when God puts two people perfectly together to raise a little person. It’s terrifying and amazing. I, like  you, have a man who can answer those questions when I would just say “um, just believe! Because!” We don’t have kids yet but I am already thanking God for a man who has been through all those questions so when they arrive (the kids and the questions) he will be there. And I will get to sit back and pray for them. Both an honor and completely scary! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Oh my gosh, they would get along amazingly! Taylor says he wants to learn Physics like his dad…. I just don’t get those brains. =)

  4. well, since we seem to have the same family dynamic, just keep checking back here. if what we’re doing is working, you can follow suit. if taylor is wearing all black and having “issues” run the opposite direction. =)

  5. It’s always amazing to see just how deep those little ones can get!

  6. That picture of Taylor kills me-he’s so cute:) Last night I got the question “why didn’t Jesus have children if he was human?” I have thanked God many times for bringing my husband into my life because he has saved me from many tough questions with our boy. I freak out if I think too much about parenting my son! I worry about him getting a good foundation in his faith without trials in his life. He sounds like Taylor-he’s a thinker.

  7. Anjrichardson says:

    Sweet Taylor!  Always a thinker!

  8. Oh without Jimmy I would FREAK too. He takes everything in stride, and is absolutely sure our kids will turn out JUST fine. If it was just me….oh I can’t even think about it. My poor kids. ha ha

  9. I should tell him to go ask his preschool teachers. =) lol

  10. I adore this. I love his brain.

I feel exactly the same about David and Nathan. David will go upstairs to tuck Nathan into bed and next thing I know they are having a full on Bible Study upstairs with Nathan asking questions I don’t think even I ever asked.

These are the minds that will bring Jesus to others. They will examine and determine their faith because of the wisdom of their fathers and then be kind and sensitive thanks to us. I am excited to see the world change under their influence.

  11. THAT?!? Is SO true and just made me tear up. And it has NOTHING to do with the PMS going on right now and EVERYTHING to do with the future of our boys. sigh. sniff sniff.

  12. It’s  so good Summer, that Jimmy is taking this role for Taylor.  You could have been the one with the thought process to answer him the way Jimmy did.  That’s why God made TWO parents essential for kids.  AND, one day Taylor will come to you with a question, and God will give you an awsome answer, and Jimmy will learn from you.  We’re all like our kids and grandkids–still learning about God and growing in our brains and hearts. You’re doing a great job, mom!!

  13. Love his little brain!  I love when kids question stuff because it means they’re independent thinkers.  God will show himself strong to Taylor, just you wait.  So exciting!

When will he be 7?  I didn’t realize he and Xander were both 6.

  14. his birthday is the end of April….SO soon!!!!

  15. You’ve got yourself a smart one. Good luck in a few years. 🙂 (BTW, our boys are so close in age!)

I’m so thankful parenting is a team sport here too. While Hubby can answer all the intellectual, brainy stuff, I can teach all the lyrics to the theme song of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. ha. ha. I am grateful that Hubby can teach his strengths & I can focus on mine. (Like relationships & food & bundles of worthless knowledge.)

How long until we can’t help our boys with all their homework?

  16.  Aww, Rayna’s is at the end of April!  Well 3/4 of the way through anyway 😉

  17. Holy smokes!! That boy will keep you on your toes, that’s for sure! Don’t you just love kids and their honesty?? This is awesome.

  18. Questioning God is normal and a good thing, but so early?! Wow.

  19. you should hear his questions….they’re insane!!
