lets talk about health baby

I should preface this by saying, I am NOT a health expert.

In any way, shape or form.

In fact, I have been known to sort of rebel against “healthy” at times,
especially in the way of eating.
I’m the, all in moderation, kind of girl.
Which really means I’m a, I’ll eat all this junk food until it’s gone so that I don’t keep eating it all week, kind of girl.
But, on the other hand…I’m always willing to try new things.
I love switching things up, doing this or that, and just you know, waiting to see what happens.
It’s just that I always drew a line at certain things.
Such as….
I would NEVER give up bread (gluten), sugar, or my beloved Diet Soda.
Ever.
Wellllll, guess what?
I just went two weeks without all three of those things.
And guess what?
I lived.
And guess what else?
I, um, kinda liked it….
I know, I know!
Where the heck is OLD Summer????
I don’t know you guys, but there is this whole world out there that is bright and shiny and happy, and I am sorta enjoying being a part of it.
{shiny happy people laughing….}
Le benefits of the fast?
Energy.
{after the first few days…}
A flatter (not flat though, mind you) tummy.
Self Confidence.
Happy, happy, joy, joy.
And I thought happiness only came through Diet Soda, sugar and bread….
so you can imagine my shock.
Anyway, I took a break this weekend from the whole health kick so that I could keep my existence in life.
You know, not wanting to pass out and all.
And here’s what is weird.
One Snickers Bar and Cherry Pepsi later, and I was a FIEND.
I mean, call me Edward needing Bellas blood (yes, I caved and watched the dang movie)….
I was a girl on a mission.
I needed more!!!
Sandwiches, chocolate, ice cream, OH MY….I was in taste bud heaven.
What happened next?
Bliss?
Nasomuch.
More like a crash from EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER land.
I needed a nooner. {Nap, I mean.}
I needed to mope.
I needed to cry.
I needed more sugar, bread, and soda.
I don’t know what to make of all this…except that I’m thinking I may like the healthier me.
Jimmy’s on board now with the no sugar thing, because he is trying to make weight for his upcoming Jiu Jitsu tournament, so we’ve made the commitment to stay on track at least until Valentines Day…
And then who knows.
I’m not sure I’m willing to give up the goods for life, but for a season, definitely.
So, if any of you have any AH-Mazing gluten free/sugar free recipes, pass em along. Seriously. Now!
Sorry, that’s just the sugar withdrawals talking….

  1. Giving up pop was one of the best things I ever did!! It really helped with my caffeine issues and now I just have coffee with a little flavored creamer and no sugar. Bread would be so hard for me to cut out but maybe I will try that next….I just love bread so much!

  2. I had to give up dairy when I was breastfeeding Claire because she had a milk protein allergy… and it was the best feeling! I dropped 10 lbs in close to 2 weeks! Craziness… though, cheese and I are back on again, sometimes I wish we were on the outs. But, it’s really hard to go out to eat when you can eat cheese!

  3. Can’t so much help you with a healthy diet, considering mine consists of tacos and beer (most days).

  4. ooooh!!! thanks for the book rec lady!! gonnna chchcheck it out!!!

c and i have been on a total fruit smoothie kick! we bought huge bags for frozen fruit buckets of vanilla yogurt and the whatev juice your heart desires…but place it in a blender (i go for the blueberry/strawberry/raspberry/blackberry overload) dump your yogurt and juice and ice cubes in and blend blend blend to absolute yummo perfection!!!!

i would choose this over chocolate any time!!!

  5. I stopped drinking pop… but its gotten a lot easier, and I feel so much better.

  6. We cannot be friends if you’re giving up bread and stuff.

    I mean…seriously.

But I love you. I do.

  7. Good luck on all that! It’s taken me a long time to get away from all that sugar crap, as well. But, I was raised by a father who would eat a tub of ice cream in one sitting, straight from the container….

I’m sure I’ve got some recipes around here. I’ll look for you. 🙂

  8. So I gave up Pop last year and I have not really looked back. Occasionally, I will buy one or at a restaurant but NEVER have them at home. We switched to Crystal light or water or COFFEE…YIKES, the COFFEE has increased…

Really, a flatter tummy…man, I need to cut out carbs…wait, where are my doritos?? {Im happy for the healthier you}!

  11. Isn’t it amazing. I Gave up gluten a while ago for 3 months straight because a Dr. recommended it for my IBS stomach issues. WELL…I was shocked when my whole mood and mental health was better! My husband said I was more patient and pleasant to be around. I noticed my attention at work was a lot better ( I later learned that gluten free diets help kids with ADD and autism) so this makes sense. I was overall, an better person physically and mentally. I started cheating over the holidays because it got hard, and I have been on and off since, and not feeling that great.
I also gave up FAKE sugars for the most part- which is really hard because a lot of diet food has fake sugar to flavor it! That made me feel physically and mentally better too. I gave up the diet soda (again for the most part- I can never say never or else that means I will fail) and I use a tiny bit of raw sugar in my coffee now. I figure the real raw stuff in small doses is better than the fake chemical stuff ??
I have gluten free cookbooks. I will gather my favorite recipes and get it to you soon! It really is amazing how these foods effect us, isn’t it?? I never believed it until I felt it. Oh, and I forgot …the gluten free diet helped with my anxiety too!

  12. Good luck keeping it going! I just read that some experts consider sugar to be worse for you than smoking cigarettes. Gross.

I stay away from sugar as much as possible. HFCS is the devil.

  13. I hear you…i’m on the same kick. love how I feel when I’m all cleaned out but the cravings are crazy!!! glad you are getting through it.

  14. That’s great!! I used to be addicted to soda myself. Would wake up in the middle of the night needed the crap. Now I’m all water and soda once in a while. Sugar though…I have my moments.

    Gotta have my bread though!

  15. I so need to eat healthier…and i say this as i shove a handful of lays kettle cooked jalapeno chips into my mouth…

  16. I hope you’ll share some of your new recipes Summer! I will be looking for low-sugar/no sugar recipes too to help me battle my gestational diabetes!

Good for you guys and yay for energy!

  17. hey- just checking out your blog- love it!

i could NEVER go a single day without gluten- i’m a carb queen! i have never been a pop drinker, thank god, but my boyfriend drinks like 8/day and is trying to cut back. yikes!

    p.s. your tattoo is incredible!

  18. Wow… I’m amazed at your results, Summer! That’s fabulous. I can definitely do without soda. I’m trying to purge it from my house, but BF loves it.

Sugar I can do almost without… I need just a bit in my morning coffee… and what occurs in normal food and cooking.

Bread, no way! I could never do it. I know you said that and you did, but not me. Need me some carbs, especially of the high-fiber sort. Wheat bread, yum. It’s healthy, right?

  19. Holy moly, you’ve got way more self control than you give yourself credit for. How are you getting by without your beloved PB&J? I don’t think I could ever give up bread… I need Subway in my life. But I think for Lent I am going to give up Soda(of course this means I am going to overload on tea and coffee b/c I die without caffeine, but whatever!) and hope it sticks! Fingers crossed!

  20. So bread means pasta too? Rice?

And sugar? What would I put in my coffee?

I am all for needing more energy….interested in what you eat! Good luck I will be following along….

  21. Can we get back to you watching Twilight? Thoughts?

  22. I am the exact same way. One little taste and it’s all over for me. I did a wheat free/gluten free diet once about 5 years ago. It lasted 1 week and I’ve never been on it since although I thought about it.

  23. I can live, and mostly do, without soda.

    Bread? WTF?

Sugar… Are you effing kidding me sister?

  24. You gave up soda… that was a great move from what I have read, I on the other hand, have a Dt. MD on my desk right now.

  25. yes! cleanse baby cleanse! i have done two now. and they feel absolutely amazing! (i recommend always having a doc/natro to get started and for support throughout). crazy stories about losing strength. but it’s worth it to detoxify! i’ve been gluten free for a couple months now, until just last week, when my blood work *finally* came back. and guess what: it wasn’t the gluten, it was the EGGS! can you believe it! i’m excited to be able to eat Tony’s pizza again for sure. but i love me an omlete, so boo! but i love how i feel off gluten, so i’m going to try to only eat it a few times a week so i don’t get all bogged down like before. there are SO many alternatives to gluten, and i think for sure it’s good to diversify our diets! for sure you HAVE to check out glutenfreegirl.com. she’s AMAZING. i love her and i LOVE her book. it changed my life. even though i can no longer be in her club, officially. *sniff*.
keep it up you sexy thang!

  27. It’s sooo hard to eat healthy- which I’m finding out now that I’m pregnant–LOL I miss my ice coffees at Starbucks and McDonalds. I give you props girl for giving all that stuff up–

Here’s a list ways to drink water
    http://kellyannstudio.blogspot.com/search?q=water

  28. props woman! i gave up my soda for about seven months – loved the flatter stomach but i couldn’t resist. i have to have it! good luck on your diet route. muuah!

  29. I know that I should do JUST what you did. I know it would help with all my crummy health problems. Do I do it? Nope. But I should. And I admire you for doing what I don’t.

And I totally get the fiending thing. I did the gluten free thing for a while a few years ago and when I found out I actually WASN’T gluten intolerant, I went BONKERS. I totally get it. 🙂

  30. I’ve heard people say that they feel a hundred times better giving those things up (after the initial withdrawal period), but dang…I just can’t do it yet.

I love my diet soda, my bread, and my sugar.

    Maybe someday, though. Maybe someday.

  31. I need a health cleanse like you too… DESPERATELY! All I can think about right now is chips, pop, and BREAD! I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!

  32. Oh goodness, I thought I was doing better with the health but then it always comes back to haunt me, good work for keeping the healthy spirit!

  33. gahh! i hate diets. whenever i see or hear the word…i put both fingers in my ears and sing “LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!!!”

guess i don’t need to tell you i’m no help. haha.

  34. Wow, those 3 things are all I have had for like a month. I vow to eat a vegetable sometime in February!

  35. interesting…maybe I’ll have to try that bc heavens knows it doesn’t matter that I’ve kicked the workouts into high gear…that scale doesn’t change

  36. Okey dokey, so at the risk of sounding completely stupid, what exactly does going “sugar free” entail? I mean, there is freaking sugar in SO much stuff. Are you talking like…no cookies, no juice, no candy. That sort of stuff, or just plain no ANYTHING that has any sugar in it? Man, I’ve got such a mad sweet tooth – I don’t know if I could do it. But I’d love to hear more about the specifics of how you implement it.
