fireproof

So, I had several friends tell me that Jimmy and I just had to watch this movie, Fireproof.
And so, many moons later, we gave in and rented it despite the fact that Kirk Cameron was in it. Not saying I don’t love the guy….
{Mike Sever Fever}
But, it’s Mike Sever!!!
Anyway, here’s the dialogue Jimmy and I had the first ten minutes of the movie:
Me: Wow, the acting….something’s not right. Is it the acting?
Him: Maybe it’s the music. Or the acting. How long should we give it?
Me: Well at least three trusted sources said it was good, so I guess we should hang in there.
Him: Mmmm kay.
And then I started texting those people who told me to watch it and said, “Seriously?!? The acting!!! Cheesy, right?!?”
But an hour later, we had forgotten the bad acting and were instead mesmerized by the story. The familiar story to so many marriages.
And when it was finished, I wanted to call every couple I knew and tell them they needed to rent it. Especially because my man was the sweetest ever the minute the credits rolled.
He said:
On the day we were married, you had impacted my life so much so that no matter how you could possibly change in the future, it was worth the commitment I was making to stay with you for the rest of my life. That’s how much I loved you then, and I am even more in love with you now. I made a commitment to you and I will always fight for you. No matter what.
Okay, seriously?!?
Getting through the cheese is totally worth your husband saying sweet things to you.
If you’re married, go rent it and watch it together.

  1. I loved the movie and recomend it to every married couple out there. I took my husband to the movie to see if it would impact our marriage. I asked him what he thought of the movie. He said, “nice story line”. I was very disappointed in the outcome of our date to the theaters. I also bought the book that I recomend to couples who have strong or weak marriages. I know from my experience when you are married to a person who is very depressed they can not see what good could come from the movie and the book.

  2. AMAZING movie!!! I’m not married, but really enjoyed and appreciated the wonderful story!

    -Summer

  3. I loved it also. I had read the book first and thought it was AWESOME. When hubby and I started watching the movie, we agreed that it was so so so cheesy! I thought now way could this be the same movie everyone was raving about. But we both really enjoyed it once we were able to look past the acting.

  4. I love this movie as well. I’m going through some marital drama/trauma (both fit) right now and a friend gave it to me. Love it. Watched it several times. Bought “the love dare”, too. We’ll see. I’m glad you decided to sit through the acting. It helps to remember that they are all volunteers. No one is a professional (besides Mr. Cameron–technically).

  5. Oh man what a good guy you have there. I have not seen this movie. I wonder what I would need to do to get Jeff to watch it with me? 😉

  6. Summer- I felt exactly the same way. My hubs and I watched it together at a special viewing at our church and I thought some of the acting was pitiful- like someone had handed a couple of passersby the script only moments before they yelled, “Action!”.

But then, just like you, I was caught up in the story line and my eyes were filled with tears by the end.

    I even bought the book.

I don’t know that I have ever been so moved by such bad acting in my life.

  7. Someone just left a comment on one of my posts today about that movie. Weird…*cue twilight zone music*

  8. yes the acting was cheesy. it was not THE best movie I’ve ever seen. But it was a good movie, driving home wonderful Christian principles. I even started the Love Dare. ahem started but never finished. And that is the sweetest thing your hubby said. what a lucky gal 🙂 xoxoxox

  9. I need to go rent this because seriously- last night I was wondering why I was still married. My life would not change much without him living in my home except that I wouldn’t be picking up after him.

Yeah, one of those rough spots in marriage. I hope others go through this stuff too.

  10. I watched it with my sister and we had the same exact convo at the start of the movie. The bad acting was very distracting, but the story is worth the watch, for sure!

Ahh, Jimmy is my husband hero. Seriously….I love your marriage, Summer. I look up to you guys & hope to oneday have a blog dancing, baby lovin’, wife impacted, with me forever husband of my own! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

  11. Now you have my curiosity up major…hmmmm!

  12. Another movie that that church made was “Facing the Giants”. The acting is still not great, but it is a GREAT movie. You must watch that one.

    Rochelle 😀

  13. thanks for the suggestion Summer. i think it could be good for us. i think we will rent it, but i will have to lie to big D and tell him it has gangsters and guns in it. does Pesci or DeNiro make cameos? i was in love with Kirk, a.k.a. Mike, from Growing Pains. a good movie of his to see is Like Father Like Son with Dudley Moore. take care.

  14. OKay, maybe I’ll have to give it another chance. Jeff and I rented it–at the suggestion of some bloggy pals–and we couldn’t handle it. I think we turned it off 20 minutes in.

But if you REALLY say it’s worth it…..

  15. Great movie. Did you know that the film maker flew Kirk’s real life Wife in for the kiss scene, because this particular movie company doesn’t allow married people to kiss others than their spouses. Also, Kirk donated his fee for making this movie to a kid’s cancer camp. I bet you like the movie even more now, lol. There is also a book you can purchase called The Love Dare and it’s awesome. It’s filled with 40 days of love challenges that are sure to enrich your marriage. What a sweet Husband you have!! I have a sweet one too. Just check out my post from two days ago called The Icing On The Cake.

  16. SO freaking sweet!!!! I loved the movie, although I agree that the acting was HORRIBLE. My hubs sniggered and made jokes through most of the movie – but I know he liked the overall story. Kinda strange that now he’s going to be going to school to be a fire fighter! ACK! lol

  17. It was good, wasn’t it? And how awesome that your husband said that! And the acting? Terribly pathetic.

  18. Whoa, he is a keeper for sure! 🙂

  19. My husband and I watched it and we too both thought it had some pretty cheesy acting but it was such a good movie with a great story. We both loved it! Another good one (with bad acting also) is Facing the Giants.

  20. I dragged my husband to see this in the theatre! at least that meant we couldnt make fun of the acting until it was over, at which point we were both very moved by the story.

  21. Gosh….I LOVE this movie 🙂 we went and saw it in the theater opening day – I agree that EVERY married couple should see it.

And wow – nice words from your Jimmy!

  22. We watched it and you know what, the acting almost drove me crazy, but I loved the message. And this in day and age (I sound like my Mother) when there are so many marriages that are ending in failure…well, it is good to see something that promotes marriage and making it work! We loved it too. Especially Gary. I however, did not get a speech like yours. How freaking nice is that? : )

I just have one question? Is he mourning the loss of your boo too? : )

  23. I’ve been debating whether or not to see this, I’ve heard a ton of people talk about it. Thanks for writing about it!

  24. Mike Sever’s all grown up.

Loved the movie. Hubby and I saw it in theatre.

  25. wow…your hub actually said that? dude, you’re one lucky gal!
never even heard of the movie but hey, i might give it a go!
    xxx

  26. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww I’m so glad Alicia directed us to this post! I am going to put this on our “must watch” list. I’ll let you know what we think! 🙂
