this old house

I feel some change a coming. {And it actually has nothing to do with Obama!}
This move has me fawning over design sites and blogs like never before, and I’ve even started an inspiration folder of pictures. I don’t know what’s coming over me, but it’s seeming like my style is changing. I think it might have something to do with the fact that the new place is so small, and I want to make it as bright and happy as possible. Whatever the reason, I’m loving what is drawing me in. But, before I show you the inspiration of the new me, here’s what I have now.

So, you see…lot’s of neutrals. Now, look at the space I have to work with…we’ll call it the before…
And here’s my inspiration album for the new place…
I have a shopping trip to Ikea planned this week, and I can’t wait to get started making this apartment the cutest thing yet. I’m also considering having the kids share a room, and making the third bedroom a playroom. Good idea? Bad idea? We’ll see, I guess.
Anyway, I’m obsessing, yes I know. But, it’s keeping me excited about moving forward rather than being sad about what I’m leaving behind…

  1. Ok there are so many ideas that I liked that I cant list them all. Loving all the storage ideas and am currently implementing them in my own house redo. Love, love love all the bright colors. Kids sharing a room, could work since your kids are close in age, but brother may not like sister (gasp) in his room for modesty when she is a little bigger?? I say try it out and see if it works! I tried that with my girls but let me tell ya, with 6 years between them it didnt work at all! Sorry for the long comment!

  2. I’m totally with you about the obsessing, haha, I think I have lists and folders full of pictures for every possible room a house could ever have saved on my computer. 🙂

I love the pictures you’ve chosen, they’re all so bright and cheery! I really like the apartment too, it’s much bigger than I was imagining, and I can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  3. Ooohh I love your inspiration pics! So my style! Bright & Happy! & I happen to LOVE small spaces too! I grew up in a tiny house & now live in a rather large one. I totally prefer my tiny house!

I can’t wait to see what you do with your new place!

  4. I can’t see your inspiration stuff cuz my computer is slow, but i do LOVE that stripey, zebra-ish carpet. I would just add more red to that room and maybe splashes of yellow.

  5. Popped in from SITS to say hi!

  6. You have such a great sense of style, I cant wait to see what you come up with…

    Have fun with it!!

    Jay

  7. You’re gonna have lots and lots of fun with this, I can tell!

  8. Sounds like a fun project. I love Ikea. So many great finds there.
We’ve done the kids sharing and not sharing. It all depends on the ages, I think. But, it can always be changed back:)

  9. Wow you are going to have fun being creative. You’ve got some great ideas for sprucing up the new digs. Since your going to Ikea maybe you should check out this blog

    http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/

and some of the past entries. Cool ideas there. I can’t wait to see what you come up with

  10. Yes to the kids sharing a room!! It isn’t for a long time and you will get soooo much use out of the playroom. Nate and Lucy shared till she was almost 3. We had to stagger bedtimes sometimes and put the kid that would fall asleep right away (Nate) in the room before the one who liked to take
F O R E V E R to fall asleep(Lucy.) But it worked! And you can always stash a pack and play in the playroom (or your room) for Chloe to go nap in sometimes.

Have so much fun with your inspiration!! I look forward to seeing what happens!

  11. Oh my dear Summer! Your place is beautiful, but I totally understand the absolute need for a change. We change the colors of our rooms in our home yearly! It is addicting…I also owe you a thank you for blogging about another blog called “This Young House” because that gave me decorate house envy, and I ended up repainting my bedroom and dining room because of that!

I love the pics of the rooms that gave you inspiration, I bet your home will be sooo awesome when you are done! Happy decorating!

  12. it’s going to be so cute… i can’t wait to see what you do! it is an awesome space, with tons of potential!

you really are headed in a different direction! i love it all… what you have now and the new ideas you have.

  13. You will have so much fun changing things up! Some of the ideas are really great!

  14. I really like those ideas. You have even given me an idea or two.

  15. You have the absolute best sense of style. My house is so boring…I still have hardly anything on our walls. I just get stuck in decorating ruts and don’t know what to do. I can’t wait to see what your place looks like after your trip to Ikea. I like the before, though, too! It looks like a real cute place. 🙂

  16. love the ideas you have right now – I totally think it’s a good idea to put the kids together IF they don’t already play in their rooms all the time. If they do you’ll have to “re-train” them to only play in the playroom…know what i mean?

You have good decorating style – i’m horrible 😉

  17. You are gonna have a blast redecorating! I love doing it!

All this kids in one room I think is a great idea. Kids the age of yours love being together anyway. They aren’t at that age where they want privacy and I think it helps in teaching them to be less selfish. Okay, my real reason is that cleaning up one bedroom is less headache than cleaning up multiple bedrooms. There I said it.

  18. Decorating is so fun…it will be a great project. If they can sleep together with no problems, I like the playroom idea.

  19. We have the same chair as you do in our living room 🙂

I’m kind of in the same position as you. We have this clean slate to work with and I’m determined to not do everything neutral. I’ve done bright colors in the bedrooms so far, but stuck with neutral in the main living area. Baby steps…

We are having the girls share a room and using our third bedroom as a playroom. We’ve done that this past year as well. It’s worked out well. They like being in the same room, and it’s really nice to have extra space for all of their stuff.

  20. when we moved into our current home i went absolutely design blog craazy (want the list?)
my favorite pieces came from thisisnotikea.com (you may have to visit me to get his ultra cool and inexpensive stuff), craigslist (of course), overstock.com (surprisingly!), dutchbydesign.com, designpublic.com, etsy and ebay.com. Fav sites: designsponge, creaturecomforts, decor8, there’s more – so many more!
