clean eating grocery shopping ~ candida diet approved

I’ve made no secret that over the last few years, our family has transitioned more to the Integrative side of medicine, and it’s proven itself incredibly helpful in so many areas.  Especially when it came to healing my anxiety…which has been a true gift from Jesus, let me just tell you. (if you struggle, you know!)

That said, while there are many aspects to natural methods I may not understand and even at times agree with, I’m always up for trying new approaches and methods that my doctor (an actual M.D.) suggest or recommends.  Especially, if there’s no harm in it.

So recently, after talking with the kids’ doctor about some of the health, sleep & behavior issues we’ve noticed with the kids, we decided that maybe a good Candida Diet/Cleanse might be a good approach to see if it might bring about some changes.  It sounds intense, and it is, but it’s actually been amazing as we’re now heading into our second week.

~ A quick word about Candida ~
Symptoms can include depression, sleep issues, ADD, ADHD, anxiety, mood swings, cravings for: sugar, chocolate, cheese, bread, nuts, fruit…just to name a few.  Check this website for a more extensive list & information.
Treatment includes three parts: effective medicine to kill yeast (anti-fungals), a diet to starve the yeast (sugar/yeast free), and probiotics to replace the yeast with the good live bacteria.

Sounds yummy, huh?

The more research I do, the more I want our whole family to try this, but because Jimmy & I both have a lot of traveling coming up in the next few months, we decided to begin with the kids, starting with Taylor first. (Chloe can’t swallow pills yet, so we’re figuring out how to work around that…)  I have to say, I am amazed at how quickly Taylor’s adapted to his new way of eating, and in just a week and a half off sugar, he’s actually craving it less.  I never thought I’d see the day.  He’s already sleeping better, not waking up as often throughout the night…and he’s actually sleeping in past 5am!!!  Again.  Never thought I’d see the day.

Thankfully, our amazing doctor armed us with booklets packed with information, a grocery shopping list for Trader Joes, and a mini cookbook to help set us on our way to success.  It was almost like he knew me too, because the first section of that cookbook started with: For those who can’t cook.  Um, HELLO!

After pouring over the recipes and approved food items, I set out to Sprouts & Trader Joes to get all that we needed…and then came right home to film “the haul” so as to hopefully help others.  I have to say, even if you never decide to do a thing with or about Candida, this haul will hopefully still help inspire you to try new yummy heathier products and meals.

Okay. So let’s state the obvious. I’m not a doctor. I can’t pretend to know all the in’s and out’s about Candida better than any google search can. And even then be careful because Google has lots of opinions, some even debating whether or not Candida is truly a thing.

But, from my experience in trying to battle anxiety for years and then finally finding healing through bio-identical hormones (something Google also likes to debate), I’d say never say never. Do your research, and let your symptoms or lack there of, be your guide. (Well, your symptoms as well as a good doctor. Duh.)

superfood smoothie recipe for even the pickiest kids (and parents)

Over the last few years my family has slowly made the change to go extra clean and healthy in our grocery purchases.  We only buy organic, and I read the ingredients on EVERYTHING.  If there isn’t a health benefit, it generally doesn’t go into the shopping cart.

That’s not to say that we don’t eat UNorganic or UNhealthy sometimes too.  But, when it comes to what we buy at the store, it’s rarely junk.  And Trader Joes, Whole Foods & Sprouts seem to be our go to stores.

On the flip side, Jimmy & I both despise cooking and so often times we’ll find ourselves at Rubios or Panera for some take out, because eating taking out is the closest thing we can afford to having a personal chef.

One day, one day…

All that said, our kids have sllllloooooowllllly become accustomed to eating things that aren’t the normal grocery store items.
For example, they love roasted seaweed, coconut ice cream is a treat, and green superfood smoothies are a daily MUST HAVE.

In fact, Taylor begs me to make them nearly every single day, and I do because it gives me such a peace of mind in that if they eat nothing else of substance the whole rest of the day, they will ingest all that they could possibly need in one single SUPERFOOD smoothie.

So for todays #GetHealthyJanuary post, I wanted to share our most made and loved recipe.  I first got the idea from one of my dear friends, Kendra, and am constantly making little tweaks here and there, but the basics always stay the same.

smoothie

1 cup Pineapple chunks (from Costco, because we go through so much!)
1/2 cup Mango chunks (also from Costco)
1/2 cup Orange Peach Mango Juice (Trader Joes) *any juice works, as we change it up!
1/2 cup plain or coconut water
1 cup Frozen Kale (We buy the organic bag from Costco and keep it in the freezer so its nice and cold.  Plus it lasts longer!)
1 teaspoon Spirulina powder
2 tablespoons Chia Seeds or Flaxseed (1 tablespoon for my kids)
2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar (1 tablespoon for my kids)
OPTIONAL VARIATIONS WE’VE ADDED: Protein powder, 1/2 banana, 1/2 apple

Recently I was talking with another friend who was struggling with her own very picky children, and she had no idea how to get them to eat healthy.  I gave her this magic recipe to try, and a few days later she texted me that it had been a GIANT SUCCESS!!!

If you happen to be like us, or our kids, and you struggle to get in all your “health” each day, try making this most delicious smoothie and watch the health benefits happen before your eyes!!!

Also, if you have a smoothie recipe you’re obsessed with, leave the recipe in the comments, as I’d love to try it next!

xoxo

the DTR talk: time to define the relationship

Sometimes it’s just good to have that talk.
To really set some boundaries so that you and everyone involved can really know what to expect…

I’m getting focused.
I’m defining me.
I’m defining my “brand.”
I’m defining us.

And after you watch, I need a little something from you too.

Watch and see….

***As you may have noticed, I’ve been splitting my time more between my blog and my YouTube channel.  It’s been refreshing for me to have both outlets for me to share creatively.  And I’m so incredibly thankful and grateful for every single one of you who have continued to support and encouraging me all along in “a place to say, ‘me too!'”***

inspiring links: fitness, faith, parenting, family, food & beauty

Where I’ve been and what I’ve been loving this week on the WWW!

FAITH/PARENTING:

After my “faith crisis” and especially after these last couple trips to the D.R., I can feel God in the works of changing me.  It’s as though He’s given me new eyes and a new heart.  And when I read this article on how to rescue our families, I was absolutely challenged and inspired.  In fact, I think all parents would be blessed in reading and following his advice.  How can we rescue the family? (John MacArthur a.k.a JMac as we call him in our house.)

~~~~~~~
PARENTING:
A friend sent this to me this week since we are both in the throws of sibling conflict.  Having tried every method and read every book, I was all about learning another way to find peace.  Take a read and let me know what you guys think. 3 Steps that Transform Sibling Conflict into Sibling Comaradare  (Psychology Today)
~~~~~~~

RELATIONSHIPS:

After a women’s bible study I attended last weekend, our associate pastor came through and handed us an envelope to give to our husbands.  It was a perfect match to everything we wives had just learned in Titus 2, and I may have encouraged Jimmy to read it every day if he could. =)  This is definitely a letter EVERY husband (or soon to be husband) should read, and I’m not even kidding you right now.  Print it out and hand it over to your man ASAP.  Dear Husband (Barabbas Road Church)

~~~~~~~
FITNESS:
Burn away fat cells with this simple trick…  I’m intrigued!  Especially with my anniversary trip only 4 weeks away….I gotta get vacation body ready!!!  If you’ve ever tried this method and have thoughts on it, I’d love to hear! (Dr. Mercola)
Speaking of getting vacation ready, I’ve been upping and intensifying my workouts this week and decided to add a bit to the end of my TAM Meta workouts.  I start with one of my new fave YouTube channels Blogilates:  This particular inner thigh workout KILLS, but oh my goodness, in SUCH a good way!!!  (YouTube)
And then when my thighs are dead, I finish up with some extra arm work.  This week I used Tracy’s Hampton Arms, which I’m pretty sure nobody can finish without resting their arms at least once.  If you can, I am in AWE!!! (YouTube)
~~~~~~~

FOOD!

We’ve been trying to pin and then ACTUALLY make the healthy meals we find this week to stop our bad problem with eating out.  This was by far my favorite meal of all AND the most easy to make! Grilled Chicken & Pineapple Quesadillas (The Girl Who Ate Everything)

~~~~~~~
BEAUTY:
Ipsy: Join me on Ipsy and subscribe to the Glam Bag! You get 4-5 beauty products every month delivered to your door, for just $10. (Michelle Phan curates the bags!)  Check out my Instagram pic to see what was in this months bag, which was worth well over the $10 I spent!  Score!!!
I’ve also been totally hooked on my Conscious Box Subscription as well.  Every month, the box gets better and better, and I discover new organic and natural products that I love.
Now it’s your turn!!!  Leave a comment letting us know what blogs, links, or videos YOU loved most this week!
health. beauty. fashion. links.
Before I catch ya’ll up on my writing and videos around the www, I wanted to share a couple things that have been inspiring me as of late.
We are THAT family: A friend of mine recently recommended this blog to me when I first got back from the DR.  As soon as I started reading I immediately felt connected to her passion and heart, and haven’t missed a single blog post ever since.  She’s been incredibly sweet in helping me set up a few things for our own ministry, and her personal encouragement has come in the moments I needed it most.
Grace to You App: I’ve been in deep need of some serious preaching.  The kind that wakes you up and really gets you uncomfortable and causes you to check yourself before you wreck yourself.  JMac (John MacArthur to most) is my most favorite pastor of all time, and just this week I’ve started making a daily date to listen to the podcasts from his app.  It’s become one of the most treasured parts of my day… I get Stellas leash on (my dog, to be clear), put my headphones in, and take off walking for a good 45 minutes to an hour until my soul is revived and legs and butt are utterly exhausted.
Get the app.
It’s free.
And yet totally priceless.
This song & these lyrics.
Nothing else needs to be said.
And now where I’ve been… for those of you that like to follow along.
P&G Everyday
And that’s how to make money while you spend it.
It means so much that you are here! I know life gets busy though, so if you don't want to miss a thing, I invite you to subscribe to my blog through email!
corn free, soy free, gluten free, dairy free, free!!!!
With all the health stuff I’ve had going on over the last couple of years, I’ve started making some little changes here and there.
It was time to stop complaining and find a solution!
It’s been a journey, and I think taking it little steps at a time is the only way I’ve been able to arrive at where I am now.
And I know, I still have SO much to learn and SO far to go!
But, where I’m at this moment in time (and I’ve taken my family along with me) is that we have given up all things GMO (genetically modified).
As well as dairy.
And gluten.
And…well, is there is anything else?
Oh sugar.
The white processed bad kind.
sigh.
And what’s crazy is that in all this I’ve discovered I have a pretty intense (oh the gas and pain and sore throat!) allergy to anything with soy in it.
So, it’s a good thing that’s out anyway.
{soy is a GMO and it’s in everything, similar to corn.)
BEWARE! =)
I’m hoping that by eliminating all the crap, I can finally eliminate my many trips to the crapper each day.
{yes, I did just write that.  my mom should be so proud.}
But, just so you know…I’m certainly not jumping on any bandwagon and doing this because it’s the “in” thing to do.
{if you know me at all, it’s that I tend to do the OPPOSITE of what everyone else is.}
{middle child, right here!}
But, the fact is, that I have been researching and studying for a VERY long time, and the more I learn, the harder it has become to feed myself and my family those kinds of fake processed foods.
I want us to be as happy and healthy as we possibly can, and I want to know I did everything I knew to do physically to get us there.
{as always, there is a HUGE spiritual aspect to all this as well.  there always always is!}
Plus, with all my jobs, I don’t have time to be in the bathroom all day long.
just sayin….
And surprisingly, it hasn’t been much of an adjustment….for me.
I don’t even miss pizza!
And I’m an emotional eater FOR SURE.
But, if I’m going to be honest, (and I always am), for my kids….it’s taking a little bit longer.
They are two very strong willed children, and they won’t give up the junk without a fight.
Plus eating out or eating at other peoples houses is a slight issue we’re still learning to deal with.
Luckily, Jimmy and I are equally as strong willed.
Tired maybe (definitely), but strong willed.
And because I have been heavily relying on several of my health guru friends, I wanted to pass along some of the info I’ve been collecting, so you could check it out for yourself as well.
I’m also happy to post meal ideas here and there if that’s something you’re interested in as well.
We are simple cooks (“we” means Jimmy), so everything we make for the most part is quick and relatively easy.
{and I’m about to learn the talent of preparing the “snack plate” via my friend Juniper.}
For example, lately we’ve had….Taco salad, Mango Salsa Chicken, Brown Rice Pasta with Ground Turkey and Pasta Sauce, Scrambled eggs with guacamole and tomatoes and turkey, Orange Glazed Salmon….and more!
On the menu to come is Steak & Avocado Salad, mmmm…..
Okay…so here’s the beginning of the knowledge that has been passed down to me by my incredible friends.
{Libby, Candace, Juniper, Liz, and Aurora: thank you for helping me on this journey!}
Q:  What are the ingredients to watch out for with corn/gluten?
A:  There are so many I can’t even remember them all.  Here are a few sites you can refer to to look things up and then you can use www.foodfacts.com too but it’s not 100% accurate:
Gluten ingredients:
~~~~~~~
Q:  What do you eat out?
A:  There is  a restaurant called True Food Kitchen which is opening up, and I have have the Grass Fed bBison bBurger minus the bun and cheese there.
{make sure you skip the sauce too if you have a soy allergy!  i found out the hard way.}

The places I have eaten out are as follows:

Sammy’s Woodfire Pizza:
They have a gluten free menu.  I ate a veggie pizza with gluten free crust and no cheese.  Very Yummy

Double Meat with whole grilled onion extra tomato protein style

Steak Salad with brown rice, grilled veggies, pico de gallo salsa only and side of guacamole.
*{Be aware that their meat is cooked with soybeans.  I will be complaining about this, because I NEED Chipotle in my life!  it’s just that I get sick every time I eat there!}*

 Any restaurant that serves wild caught fish grilled and order veggies and/or rice as the side, no bread.

Any of their salads with no salad dressing, no corn, no beans. Substitute any wild caught grilled fish in place of the chicken. Use salsa as the dressing.

Of course there are things wrong with every one of these but better than most.

~~~~~~~
Q:  What do you order online?
A: Online I order my thai coconut milk, Lara Bars, and then some Gluten Free snacks for the baby.
Q:  What medicines do you use?
A:  None of us take vitamins anymore.  So far we haven’t had to do much with medicine.  I only use it if we really need it.  I buy gel cap ibuprofen that doesn’t have corn in it.  I use hylands homeopathic medicine for the kids when they are sick. Other than that we don’t use any medicine.
Okay, so I would think that is PLENTY to get you thinking.
It certainly was for me.
And do your own research….preferrably studies and info NOT government funded.
Also, if you must…start slow.
Maybe the first month, give up dairy.
The next month, gluten.
And so on….
Just do something.
Make a change.
I have a LOT more to share, but I’ll save some for another post soon.
This is quickly becoming a passion of mine so I can’t seem to learn enough.
{add that to my Zumba teaching & freelance writing and I’m kind of an all over the place mess!}
And if you guys are on a similar journey with your diets, PLEASE, leave comments and ideas and suggestions below!
We all need support!
P.S.  I also gave up soda.  Even my Zevia because it had corn in it.
I’m a strong woman, hear me ROAR!
i cooked, i baked, i share (banana bread, mac n cheese)
If you follow me on Instagram (you do, right?!? if not, it’s lemusingsofmoi, find me!) then you would see that lately I’ve been learning to cook and bake.
I can’t say I quite enjoy it yet, but I am quite enjoying the amazing taste and the fact that it’s made with ALL real and healthy ingredients.
{plus one of my besties comes over to help teach me AND she brings pineapple wine, so it’s not THAT bad….}
Here are two of the recipes I made yesterday from Christine Avanti’s book, Skinny Chicks Eat Real Food:
Bangin’ Banana Bread
makes 16 slices
2 ripe bananas
1/2 cup unsweetened organic applesauce
2 large eggs (cage free)
1/2 cup 0% or 2% Greek yogurt
1/2 cup Zsweet
1/2  cup organic brown sugar
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup ground flaxseed meal
1 teaspoon fine sea salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Coat a 9×5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.
With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the bananas, applesauce, eggs, and yogurt in a large bowl.  Beat in the Zsweet and brown sugar until combined.
Whisk together the flour, flax meal, salt and baking soda, and cinnamon in a medium bowl.  Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture and beat until blended.
Pour the batter into the loaf pan and bake until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean,
50-55 minutes.  Cool in the pan for 10 minutes then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.  Cut into 1/2 inch slices.
Heirloom Mac ‘n’ Cheese Muffins
makes about 36 muffins
1 pound whole wheat elbow macaromi (i used quinoa pasta)
4 teaspoons olive oil
1 shallot
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 cups half-and-half
1 1/2 cups 1% milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter (organic)
5 tablespoons whole wheat flour
1 pound reduced-fat sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 pound Gruyere cheese, grated
1 tablespoon coarse sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 large heirloom tomatoes, diced
1/4 cup seasoned dried breadcrumbs
3 teaspoons minced fresh thyme leaves
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Coat three 12-cup muffin pans (disposable aluminum pans will work fine for this) with cooking spray.
In a large pot of boiling water, cook the pasta until al dente, according to the package directions.  Drain well.
Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a small skillet over medium heat.  Add the shallot and garlic and cook until transluscent, about 5 minutes.  Set aside.
Combine the half-and-half and milk in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat, do not let boil.  Keep warm.
Heat the butter and 2 teaspoons of the oil in a large pot over low heat.  Whisk in the flour and cook, whisking frequently, until the mixture thickens and turns a very pale yellow, about 5 minutes.  Add the sauteed shallot-garlic mixture and the warmed milk mixture and gently stir until the mixture thickens, 2 to 4 minutes.  Remove from the heat and stir in the Cheddar, Gruyere, salt and pepper.  Add the cooked macaroni and stir to combine.  Fold in the chopped tomatoes.
Mix the remaining 1 teaspoon oil with the breadcrumbs in a small bowl.  Fill each muffin cup about three-forths full with the pasta mixture and sprinkle each muffin with breadcrumbs.
Bake until the sauce bubbles and the macaroni has browned, 30-35 minutes.  Cool for 5 minutes.  Served garnished with thyme.
tracy anderson method: q&a
This was SUPPOSED to be my video for last week….and then summer vacation happened.
Or rather, it’s continuing to happen.
What the?!?
“Dear jesus, give me the strength…” I pray, as i rock back and forth, back and forth.
I think there should be an advent calendar for us moms simply for the back to school countdown.
And instead of chocolate (or rather, in addition to!) there will be a stiff drink inside when you open the little door.
There’s my million dollar idea right there…
And now onto my video which has NOTHING to do with the above.
Today, I’m answering just some of the questions I get in regards to my two plus years of doing the Tracy Anderson Method.
If you have questions I didn’t answer, leave them in the comments and I’ll be happy to answer them in my next (part two) video!
