how to style bangs

Quick Tip Tutorial Time: How to Style Bangs!

It’s no secret that I’m absolutely obsessed with my bangs, or as I like to call them, my affordable botox!

I once tried to grow them out about a year ago, but only made it a few months before I found myself deep in some sort of identity crisis…
I mean, who am I even without my bangs???

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t that extreme (depending on who you ask…)…but suddenly I just couldn’t handle it any longer, so I quickly rushed back into the arms of the girl who does my hair, and begged for fringe to come back into my life.
The moment the first cut was made, life was complete. I knew who I was, and we all moved on.
(If you watched our fam cams in the midst of that time, you know exactly what I’m talking about…and thank you, by the way, for putting up with me!)

I share that touching story to explain why I think I might be a qualified and trusted guru when it comes to subject of styling bangs….(just don’t dig into my past to see how i styled them in the 90’s though, yikes!!!)

Also, I want to start doing more of these quick tip videos, so make sure to let me know what else you guys want to see!

hair tutorial: how to get perfect beachy waves + a giveaway

Finally!!! A hair tutorial!!!

Let me just confess that I have the most confused hair in all the earth. It kind of wants to be straight, but then other parts kind of want to be bendy (not curly though…I could only wish!). And that is exactly why I thank the good Lord for creating the people who invented curling irons and straighteners. Because now I can pretend I have good hair most of the days of my life. Ha!

So todays tutorial is all about how to get those boho beachy loose curls that have become my go to look… mostly because it’s actually easy to do AND the waves will last for a few days without having to curl again!

I hope this is helpful and let me know if you guys end up giving it a try! xo

Also, as a part of this video collab, we’re giving away a $100 Sephora gift card!

how to straighten hair with minimal damage | #thebeautybalance

I’ve been diving right into this 31 Day Writing Challenge, where each blogger chooses a topic to write about for 31(ish) days. Because it’s right where God has me, I’ve chosen to share on Blending Beauty with Balance.
(#thebeautybalance, if you want to follow along…or better yet, join the conversation using the hashtag!)

It’ll be a fun and encouraging 31(ish) days where I’ll be sharing tips and tricks while digging deeper, finding purpose, and blending beauty with balance — all with a heart of intention. {all 31(ish) Days will be linked here}

Okay, I get that straightening your hair isn’t rocket science.
It’s not.

BUT! You guys, I have happened upon my HOLY GRAIL (which for those who may not know, means “the ultimate best ever”) flat iron in all the years I have ever been straightening my hair. And let me tell you, that is a lot of years. So, I think I had better tell you so you don’t have to waste the time (or money) that I have.

Also, not only do I finally have an incredible hot tool to share with you, but I thought I’d also share the best products I’ve discovered that will make all the difference in keeping the integrity of your hair while you’re busy applying all that heat.

You want to look good yes, but you also want to keep your hair (I’d imagine). So, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page with doing everything we can, both in choosing our products and our tools, to not only look good…but keep our hair. And keep it healthy.

Balance, people.

Have we figured out yet it’s all about balance?

Okay, let’s get to why I love this flat iron and the products that have saved my hair.
And what better than to just show you how amazing it all truly is….

Enjoy, and I so hope your hair thanks me one day!

a visit to the dark side…

For quite some time I’ve been talking about and flirting with the idea of going dark with my hair.
And recently when the topic of needing to be on a BUDGET came up (over and over again), I decided that maybe it was time to get more serious with my decision.

And by serious, I mean I headed for a wig store.

Of course, only after texting my closest friends as well as my colorist, Nikki, about 1000 times asking them what they thought I should do.
{i’m thinking Nikki would RATHER i start doing my own hair at this point}
What began as “I’ll just run in and try one on really quick” became about an hour long process with lots of pictures and my mind more confused than ever.
redhair
{jimmy’s pick. i can hear the whispers at chloes private preschool. i dance. but not this kind.}

{almost black}

{solid dark brown}

menzooey
{feelin’ a bit like zooey}

darknblonde
{blonde vs. dark}

wigs
{my options. clearly i’m obsessed.}
Finally, Jimmy suggested I simply BUY the wig and wear it around the house to help me decide so we could PLEASE JUST LEAVE THE STORE.
Actually, I think he muttered, “Just buy it, let’s go…” and then headed out to the car with the kids.
Now, I’m not one to be given permission to buy something (especially when on a budget) and turn it down, so I quickly slapped down my plastic and bought that costume wig and proudly wore it all the way home.
darkhair
{my kids kept telling me to take it off.  jimmy seemed happy…to be out of the store.}

And, I continued to wear it (and try it on with different tops) all night until it was time to get ready for bed.
Also, I texted and Instagrammed pictures all the night long.
{all in addition to coming up with a brilliant party idea consisting of wigs & champagne}

I am very thorough when making decisions….
And you guys, as I stated on my Facebook page, changing my hair drastically is a much bigger decision then anything ever, including whether or not to have another baby.
Okay maybe not, because that decision is easy.
No.
Way.
Never.
Again.
Anyway, after a day of practice….I think I’m actually leaning towards the dark side.
I’ve been blonde for SO long, and I’m antsy for a change.
Plus, it’s budget friendly.
{although if i hated it, I would be all “budget what?”}

Life is short, it’s just hair, and I can always go back to blonde another day.
Sometimes in life, it’s about being free and simply throwing caution to the wind…
If you call buying a wig and obsessing all day throwing caution to the wind….

I guess time (days) will tell just how wild and crazy I am.

I have issues.
No need to tell me.

hair decisions: back to blonde or stay ombre?

In just a couple weeks I have a life changing decision to make.

Do I stay with the ombre I have going on?

P1020448

P1020447
P1020446
or….do I go back to my blonde roots?
{which give me roots way more often….the only drawback.  sigh.}
P1010698

P1010683

P1010612

I canNOT decide on this for the life of me.

On one side, I love that I can go longer between salon visits (which saves me $) because my roots aren’t so severe.
On the other side, I feel like having blonde next to my face makes me happier and lighter and like a real life blonde.
BUT….the roots show faster which makes appointments closer together.

You just can’t have it all, can you?
Or maybe some of you can, but that’s just not my real life.

So all you people who read and don’t comment, now’s not the time to be shy.
I need your help.
Ombre for another few months, or go back to blonde now?

Ready….
Set….
Be opinionated.
{but kind}

{fashion post to these pictures to come tomorrow.}

hair do i did: simple fancy

twistedheadband2
P1020086
P1020085

P1020075
{super easy to do. simply put on a headband but not under your hair, then twist hair over & under the headband}

Jimmy came home from work quite happy about this particular ‘do.  He LOVES when I wear my hair back, and so he was quite impressed with the newfound way to funk it up.  It’s so adorable how just these little things, like doing my hair in a way he likes, makes him smile.

….and now a word NOT about hair:

I gotta say, this week was an introspective one.  You notice?
I’ve been in analyzing mode quite a bit, and sometimes I wish I could just….relax.
*******
I’m in MAY-jah questioning mode about my blog…like, what are my intentions and where should my focus be?  I find myself wondering where it should go from here, and after all this time, if there is still a place among all the many for what I think I have to share….
*******
I’m questioning the job I’m doing as a mom.  Am I loving enough, giving enough attention, being in the moment enough, teaching and showing the heart of Jesus enough?
*******
I question myself.  A lot.  Is this decision right?  Would that decision be better?  Am I growing and learning and is it all enough?  I put so much pressure on myself…I hate to disappoint.
*******
And then there are all the other inner thoughts of my heart…such as….
Working with the youth girls at my church, brings me back to a place where everything changed in my life.
{it’s a story i have yet to share, but I will.  soon.}
And it’s good now, but I look at them…at the age I was…and I just want it to be different for them NOW.
And so I make a promise to God to love them, and be there for them, and hope that somehow I can provide a place of acceptance…of unconditional love….of understanding….that may never otherwise be there in the things they are dealing with.

Ya, and you thought you were getting a hair post.
ha!
Sometimes that’s me though.
In one moment I’m excited about hair, and the next, I’m pondering the deep meaning and issues of life.

There’s a chick for ya.

And you?
Any good hair tips you want to share?
Deep thoughts you’ve been having?

Let’s be chicks together.
Don’t leave me hanging.
It could be very awkward otherwise.

hair ‘do i did: little buns, big curls

What started with this:
bighairbuns
By the next morning became this:
bighair5
And with a couple of hours and a little Body Shop Coconut Oil Hair Shine, it became this:
bighair4
bighair3
bighair2
And of course, it’s all thanks to the lovely Maegan, who is the MASTER of wearing big hair amazingly.
I loved this look SO much that I may just need to move to Texas so I can pull it off every day of the week.
Or just do it every other week here in Cali.
Probably the latter for now….

hair do i did: i went ombre

I did it….my platinum blonde is gone.
We decided to take baby steps and not go TOO drastic….
and I’m quite okay with that approach.
Although…I think next time we’ll probably add more blonde to the bottom.
In the meantime, I am happy, and I love.
And because it’s late, all I have are the iPhone pictures that we took in the salon, but I’ll be sure to take some better ones later this week….

beginnerombre2
So fun.
And now, I’m off to celebrate new hair AND the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!
Praise Jesus for school.
That’s all I can say.

hair do i did: twist/fishtail tutorial

I know I took a week off the videos….a little something called pms captured me last week…
But, I’m BACK!
And with a hair tutorial this time.
Only, as I was taping the tutorial (last saturday)….real life happened, and it just couldn’t be edited out.
And because life happened, I couldn’t film another take.
Welcome to my life. =)
And then go immediately after to take your birth control.

Let me just say that it was a fire ant bite which caused the drama.
And I ended up taking her WITH me to dinner and drinks, because I am a mama that rolls with the punches.
I am also a mama that needed a girls night out…
and also maybe a drink.
{i just had one! don’t judge!}

Plus, I did my hair!
And my makeup!
Someone had to see!!!

She whined and cried through most of it…on my lap…while I tried to eat and drink.
But doggone it, I had my night out.
