health. beauty. fashion. links.

Before I catch ya’ll up on my writing and videos around the www, I wanted to share a couple things that have been inspiring me as of late.

We are THAT family: A friend of mine recently recommended this blog to me when I first got back from the DR.  As soon as I started reading I immediately felt connected to her passion and heart, and haven’t missed a single blog post ever since.  She’s been incredibly sweet in helping me set up a few things for our own ministry, and her personal encouragement has come in the moments I needed it most.

Grace to You App: I’ve been in deep need of some serious preaching.  The kind that wakes you up and really gets you uncomfortable and causes you to check yourself before you wreck yourself.  JMac (John MacArthur to most) is my most favorite pastor of all time, and just this week I’ve started making a daily date to listen to the podcasts from his app.  It’s become one of the most treasured parts of my day… I get Stellas leash on (my dog, to be clear), put my headphones in, and take off walking for a good 45 minutes to an hour until my soul is revived and legs and butt are utterly exhausted.
Get the app.
It’s free.
And yet totally priceless.

This song & these lyrics.
Nothing else needs to be said.

~~~~~~~~~
And now where I’ve been… for those of you that like to follow along.
YouTube
(there’s another new video up today if you click over: My May health/beauty/fashion haul!}
May Empties:
Showing what I used up in the month of May and giving a little mini review on each product.  These are some of my favorite videos to watch, so hopefully you enjoy!
P&G Everyday
I love writing for P&G and Home Made Simple because it challenges me to really dig deep and learn everything I can on the topics assigned to me.
Here’s what I’ve worked on recently…
Easy Ways to Cut Calories w/out Feeling Like You’re Starving
Putting a Summer Spin On Workouts: Swimming, Running and Hiking with Suzanne Bowen
Nail Painting is all the rage, and I have the techniques you need to know
What eating after 8 does to your metabolism
And then of course there’s my beloved SheKnows Mommalogues!
Click on over to watch us chit chat with the princess about baby names and parenting advice…
It’s about that time for Kate & William if you didn’t already know! (I didn’t until I got these topics to film! Oops!)
~~~~~~~

I hope you all have an incredible weekend!

xo, Summer

friday favorite links: Hair Tutorials, Health Tips & Parenting 101

It’s been awhile since I’ve joined the masses of the blog world in doing Friday Link Favorites…. But I really do love reading them, so I want to join in when I can!
So here are just a few links that I loved (and some I wrote, lol) lately.
You gotta check them out!!!
~~~~~~~
Stuff on the web I loved…
With all the traveling my family and I will be doing from here on out with the building of the orphanage in the DR, reading books on my phone may not cut it on long plane rides anymore.  So when I read this article on Laura’s blog Hollywood Housewife, I knew I had found my Mothers Day Gift.  How do you read?
Is taming your child’s tongue really the answer?  Or does it really have more to do with the overflow of their heart?  I love Sarah Mae’s wisdom and approach to this, and it’s already made a difference this week in how I handle certain situations with the kids.  I’ve stopped trying to tame my childrens tongue.
My friend Karin recently turned me onto this new blog, We’re THAT Family, because of their family ministry.  It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite reads every day, because I understand her heart.  I absolutely love her honesty & compassion.  This post made me realize…she gets me, and she doesn’t even know it.  For when you need the Son.
I am so guilty of getting distracted.  I have a short attention span but a BIG heart to take on a lot all at once.  So reading this post How to focus in an age of distraction on A Holy Experience, actually really got me to focus, slow down and pay attention.  Can you relate?  ….Oh look at that butterfly….
My writings on the web….
I may be one of the only people who can ONLY braid my own hair and not others, so on SheKnows I wrote an article complete with step by step instructions and pictures: 5 easy steps to create your very own fishtail braid
And speaking of hairstyles… I also wrote another SheKnows article on Easy Alternatives to the Mom Ponytail.  Because we all need them, and we can ALL do these styles in seconds!!!
Did you know NOT flossing can lead to heart problems???  I didn’t either until I started researching it.  Check out my newfound knowledge on my P&G Everyday article Flossing: The secret to healthier teeth
I love writing for P&G, because I always learn so much in my research.  And for this one, I convinced myself that stretching every morning can change the whole day before me.  Get familiar with the benefits and then get busy stretching!!! The Benefits of Stretching: Start Your Morning Off Right With Stretching
My incredibly sweet kindred spirit friend, Stacy, wrote a life changing devotion that I absolutely loved.  This girl is the real deal, the kind of christian Jesus is truly proud of.  If you’ve ever struggled with finding joy in the midst of pain, this devotion is for you!  Finding Purpose in the Pain: 21 Days to Finding Purpose in Pain (only $3.99 on Kindle!)
And then of course, there’s the Mommalogues
….which I absolutely love!
This month we have Tia from Tia & Tamara as our celeb guest AND we have a NEW Mommaloguer!!!
So you definitely need to go check them both out!
…..
P.S. Next week I have EXCITING news to share!!!
shopping with summer & a fun purse tag!
I have attempted many blog posts this week…all in my head.
Actually, I did begin to write one and then halfway through remembered I was working on a few deadlines, and had to save the rest for later.
It’s hard being responsible sometimes….
So, while I finish up my work, and then spend the weekend preparing our hearts and suitcases for the Dominican Republic, I thought I’d leave you with a couple links of where I HAVE been in the last week.
First, check out the latest Shopping with Summer on SheKnows for tips and ideas on what to wear this Easter Sunday!
Also on Her&I YouTube this week we posted the What’s in our Purse Tag video, showing off some of our fun goodies we keep super secret down in the depths of our bags!
And while you’re there make sure to subscribe to our channel because we have another awesome giveaway coming up later in the day.
And it’s one we’ve been drooling over for quite some time!!!
Can’t wait!!!!!
I hope you have an incredible weekend celebrating Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This, by FAR, is my most favorite holiday, it’s just filled with so much hope and excitement.
And I hope and pray you experience some of that as well!
xoxo
3 staple items you can wear all week
These ideas will get you out the door quicker — while looking more chic than ever.
Sometimes keeping our outfits new and fresh every day can feel like a part time job. Who has the time for matching patterns, colors and accessories like the good old days? We have jobs, children and family commitments now.
That, however, is why every woman needs these three staple items she can absolutely wear all week — and nobody will ever notice!
~~~~~~~
…continue reading Top 3 Staple Items You Can Wear All Week (and no one will ever know) over on P&G Everyday, up now!
And let me know what you guys think, and what you’re 3 staple items tend to be!

february loves

Over at RooMag today, I’m sharing my Ultimate List of Favorites, and not necessarily just for the month of February, but of all time.

Because sometimes this month of love doesn’t just have to be about loving others….but taking a moment to love yourself!

So before February ends, why not try out some of my favorite loves and pamper yourself a bit?  You deserve it!

Check out the my ENTIRE LIST by clicking on February Loves (books, shopping websites, beauty and more!).

And leave a comment there sharing what YOU love….can be anything at all!

~~~~~~~
Also, let me just remind you of something I mentioned yesterday….
It’s VOTING TIME!!!!
Her&I and Le Musings YouTube were both nominated for Top 25 Mom Vlogs of 2013.
It would mean so much if you took a second to vote for both.
All you have to do is click both links, find our names, and click the cute little heart…and wa la!  You just voted and an angel got her wings.
And in all your free time remember that you can vote once a day until March 13.
I know it’s just a contest, but hey….why not try?
Who doesn’t want to be Top 25 of something?
{At the moment I’ve dropped from #20 to 40something…and that just hurts my feelings.}
“….it’s just a contest, it’s just a contest, it’s just a contest….”
~~~~~~~

In other news Her&I are joining forces with some other INCREDIBLE YouTubers to do a MAY-Jah giveway starting Feb 28!!!
It’s gonna be a CRAP load of high end beauty product favorites and you don’t want to miss out!  It’s only open for subscribers, so make sure to head over and SUBSCRIBE, like now.  You know, if you’re one who happens to like winning hundreds of dollars of makeup and beauty products….

shop with me on SheKnows.com!

So!  I have this new column I started doing with SheKnows and I’m super excited about it because it’s about fashion and shopping!!!

We’re calling it: Shopping with Summer, and in each article I’ll be going over outfit suggestions specifically for moms by showing what I would wear and then helping to create a similar outfit, all complete with pictures and links!

As a mom, and now especially as a homeschooling mom, I know that getting dressed beyond the cozy yoga pants (okay, for me sweats…) can sometimes seem feel like a chore.  But I also know that by just taking a few extra minutes in the day to put a little thought into what I’m going to wear out, it can make all the difference in how I feel throughout my day.

So, you guys totally have to head over to check it out!

And if you, as moms, have something coming up and you want me to cover that kind of an “event” or situation, let me know in the comments!

Okay, first one up….

been around the web and i i i…

Okay, so first off, Her & I YouTube is alive and well!  It’s been so fun adding in this project to my life, and switching things up.  It’s just the change I needed to find passion and motivation again!

Here’s the latest on our channel, and make sure to click over and subscribe with your email so you’ll get notified when we have new videos up.  (Who wants to be last to know, right???)  We just want to always be able to connect with the people watching, instead of you know, feeling like we’re just talking to ourselves.  (Like um, we kind of already are doing.)

Also, you should totally take a second and read Sarah’s post on the WHY behind Her & I….I just loved how she explained our hearts and intentions so perfectly.

So, our goal is to have between 2-3 videos up per week.  And of course, if you have ANY ideas or suggestions on what you want to see, we definitely want to hear them!

FYI, we’re totally going to do a FUN giveaway when we get to 200 subscribers, so you know…if you want.  No pressure or anything.

~~~~~~~
Besides filming, I’m still writing A LOT.  In fact, I can’t wait to share with you the articles I’ve done for Proctor & Gamble as I’ve been learning SO much!!  Plus I have another FASHION column in the works for SheKnows, so that should be fun too!
In the meantime, since I know I haven’t been HERE as much….here’s my latest on Candace’s RooMag!
Yesterdays my post was all about desiring to be Renewed in the New Year, and what truth that longing brought me to.  Sometimes it’s the simple realizations that mean the most and have the most impact, you know?
To Make Like New
~~~~~~~

It’s nice to see that as time is unfolding I am finally finding a balance and it feels so good….which reminds me…  I have a homeschooling update I need to share and soon.

Woah nelly, it’s crazy how that decision has COMPLETELY challenged and changed me.  There’s just nothing like having a mirror held up to you and seeing stuff you had NO idea was inside.  Yuck.

Anyway, more on that later.  You have videos to watch.

what i wore (last week) on the mommalogues

Okay, THIS will be the week I get my world back on track, and from now on these posts will go back to their regular scheduled day, Friday.
So I better catch up…here’s last weeks.
{writing, zumba, learning choreography, kids, summer vacation…who can handle it all???}
To see the videos check out the plug-in on the right hand sidebar or visit SheKnows Mommalogues.
Okay.  We all know (especially my family), that I don’t cook.  But, what you might not know, is that I can’t even properly think of side dishes to prepare or buy to bring to a party or picnic.  And actually, I have a super funny story about the one time I thought I finally had the perfect side dish to bring…and how it ended up being, mmmm…not so much.
what i’m wearing…
top: goodwill
headband: h&m
~~~~~~~
We are simple folk who like to celebrate the holidays in a simple way.  While in the past there are have been parties and late nights, now that we have young kids (who get psycho with less than 10 hours of sleep), we are lucky if we all stay awake to see the fireworks! (I think last year was the first!) This year, in fact, I want to go even more simple then years past…although, I have yet to pass that by the husband.  Anyway, this is what I hope to be doing this Fourth of July.
what i’m wearing….
necklace: wet seal (almost vintage!)
~~~~~~~
I decided to once again bring in my better half for this topic.  Who better to say what trait of mine our kids should get than my husband?  This was a tough one for me, because there are just so many qualities of his that I wish and hope my kids inherit….so while he chooses just one (not sure how he narrowed it down so easily), I have to name at least two.  And one has a lot to do with crying.
what i’m wearing….
top: tj maxx
necklace: kate spade…an amazing gift from my florida friend, Karin
~~~~~~~
When it comes to who I go to for cheering up when I’m down, it really all depends on who or what got me there in the first place.  If being blue has nothing to do with my kids or husband (it happens!), then a snuggle and quality time with them usually can lift my spirits.  Or at the very least center me a little.  But, when it’s my sweet family that has driven me to my breaking point (also happens!), I run as quickly as possible to, first prayer (asking/begging God to control my kids!), and then to my best friends and sisters.  It’s those amazing girls that have the incredible ability to make me laugh and help me to see the brighter side.  I feel truly blessed that I never feel alone with them around.
what i’m wearing…
dress: walmart (it’s the new target)
iWrite…off the blog
I am living a bit of my dream.
Writing and getting paid.  It’s amazing.  And wonderful.
And completely scary and overwhelming.
There are deadlines, and pitches, and editors (thankfully I have been blessed with fabulous ones), and figuring out how to work from home with kids who never stop talking or needing food.
But, still….I love it.
I feel like I have found my calling (one of them), and I am humbled that I have even been chosen to share my words outside my blog.
But in all that….I have to say, there is still nothing like the freedom of writing here.
To you guys.
My kind of people that get me…
You know me, inside and out, and still you come back for more.
{thank you for that.}
You support me, sometimes silently, but that’s okay because it’s not about needing validation so much anymore.
Even your silent support, God finds a way to bring that to my heart and soul, and I feel it.
I love this place we have created.
{and still sometimes do.}
I may not be posting HERE five times a week (although i am writing 5x a week!), but know that I am never leaving this little place.
This is my heart.
YOU are my heart.
God had a plan that Ambien Night when I started this blog, and I am SO seeing it through.
The greatest of these is Love (RooMag)
PreParenting Counseling….you in? (allParenting)
Is newlywed bliss real? (SheKnows Love)
~~~~~~~

Also?
Somehow it’s Friday already and I barely posted again here this week.
Can I blame summer vacation AND the holiday AND the 8 hr. Zumba Training Class this week???

Next week will be different.
I will be relaxed.
I will breathe.
I will write.

iWrite…off the blog

As you guys know, I’ve been happily tapping away on my computer writing up articles for SheKnows and allParenting, and I absolutely LOVE IT.
{these websites, you guys?!? TOTES ba-na-nas.}
Here’s the latest of what’s out there on the Big World Wide Web that has my name on it….
~~~~~~~
So you know, in your free time….you should TOTALLY read them, like them, share them, comment on them….all the things that I’d swoon for to help spread the article word.
xoxo
