it’s just a phase, it’s just a phase… (mommy mantra)

I posted this on my family page, but I think this deserves a spot on all things related to being woman. There has to be someone out there who relates!

Oh how I miss the Binky. What a blissful, magical device that little thing was. And if I could just remember the “expert” who wrote that all toddlers by the age of 3 should be weaned, I might have a few choice words for him this morning.

It’s just a phase, it’s just a phase…..

Let me just explain how the five months have gone since listening to the “experts.”

8pm – Bedtime. As soon as we get downstairs and comfy on the couch we hear, “Mom? Is this water good or yucky?” “Dad, I have a booger in my nose!” “Mom, can you fix the covers?” “Dad, one more hug and kiss!”
8:30 – Tears because we won’t get out the booger, fix the covers, or go back in for more hugs and kisses.
8:45 – Take away the blankie until we hear silence.
8:50 – silence….if you count “Mom, Dad! I’m being quiet now!”
9:00 – Sleep takes over.
1am – Our bedroom door opens, and monster child is crying and asking us where his race cars are. Sweet Jimmy gets up and puts him back in bed.
1:05- Temper tantrum, and our door again opens. Sweet & grumpy Jimmy repeats earlier step.
1:15 – Silence
3am – Our bedroom door opens, we hear: “Mom, Dad? Can I go play in my room now?” Sweet, grumpy, frustrated Jimmy gets up and stomps down the hallway to put him back down.
3:05 – Tears and temper tantrum. “I’m all done sleeping, I want to play, I’m a monster child! My head is about to start spinning…” I’m tired of course, but that’s something to the effect of what I’m hearing.
3:07 – Too many adjectives to explain Jimmy flies down the hall and belts out the scariest and loudest “SHHHHH!!!!” Even I, at this point, am afraid to make a peep.
3:10 – Silence
5:30am – Knock on our door, “Good morning mom and dad! Can I go play in my room now?”
5:31 – I’m on my knees praying for patience…

It’s just a phase….it’s just a phase….

Let’s not also forget that I am 31 weeks pregnant, and every 40 minutes inbetween this schedule is my time to “Piddle.”

Yes, your donations (of advice) and prayers are much appreciated!

  1. Hey, we are saucy together!! Thanks for dropping by my blog.

    p.s. Sleep is for sissies! ” )

  2. It’s moments like these I’m glad I have a dog 🙂

    Hang in there!

  3. you poor thing!! in fact, my cats do just about the same thing to me. Except they use meows, scratching and wrestling at 1am, 3am, and 5am to wake me up! Guess I’m not missing out on anything! Ha ha! Love ya girl.

  4. i am rolling in laughter remembering my days with my oldest dd. love it
    i have 4 girls from 13 to 7 months…and i haven’t slept in, well, 13 years. i agree with carrie…sleep is for sissies!!!!

  5. Oh, you poor woman. I’m so sorry! I literally put the fear of God in my oldest if he got out of bed. We also put a digital clock in his room and told him until the first number says 7, he’s not aloud out of bed. kinda works.

  6. I was Saucy last week! Hope it’s as fun for you as it was for me!!

Give the binky back. As long as he’s not totin’ it when it’s time to start kindergarten, what’s the big deal? Experts, schmexperts!

  7. Binkies are for the parents , not the kid.

Give it back to the monster child or you’ll neverr get any sleep.
He won’t get married with it.

  8. We just got rid of the binkie too. (or in our case, the Nuk). The first couple of nights were rough, but he’s adjusted now. He asks for it periodically. I know sometimes it’s rough… but think of all the $$$ you’ll save on braces!

  9. cringing thinking about what you are going through. this is our mantra too….in fact I take it a step further. When the toddler or the babe do something nutty, or uttering frustrating I say “I love you so much, you are momma’s special girl (I have two)”….keeps me from selling them on craigslist.

  10. Found your blog through SITS… great site!

Oh, I FEEL your pain on the paci (binky, buba, etc…) we’re about to go through the pain…for a 2nd time.. the 1st time did stick… we’re too much of suckers for sleep LOL

    Looking forward to reading more.

  11. I just had a baby a week ago and I know the importance of sleep while pregnant! I don’t know if your like me, but it took me hours just to get comfortable to finally fall asleep! Congrats on the pregnacy (even though your this far along). Oh and I found your blog on MBC!

  12. we’re expecting our first little one in about 3 months…i am enjoying every little bit of sleep i can get! Enjoyed the post…made me smile…I hope you get a nap!

  13. Oh, I bow to the binky, too. Or, used to. My second son didn’t want the binky! Yes, you read that right…he rejected the binky. But I still love it. Love. It. I mean…in a “remembering it fondly” kinda way. No other. 😉

    Good luck!

  14. Wow! Unbelievable how similar our stories are!! That post I wrote was awhile ago and it was fun to go back and read it. The daughter it was about no longer has those sleep issues. We lay her down at 8pm, she’ll ask for a drink and a poty break and then for the most part she’s quiet.

I think they just end up growing out of it. My second daughter is now three and is doing the EXACT same thing the first daughter did.

Same issues. Same ridiculous requests…I guess we just wait as they come to relize that we will not let them boss us around. ‘

    Tough lesson. 🙂
